About Us

The Bull’s Head is a family run business set in a 17th Century coaching inn which is situated in the heart of the Staffordshire Moorlands.  The pub was brought back to life after an extensive refurbishment. The building has been sympathetically modernised with an industrial twist creating a warm welcome for all our guests with oak beams, restored Minton tile floors, quirky seating and cosy log burners.

Our long history

For a long time the Inn was the centre of village life in Alton. It often held auctions for tythes, land, properties and their contents. It was a central meeting place for all, and parking was an issue even then. In the May of 1840 whoever left their gig and harness at the pub had 14 days to retrieve it! The Horton Bible Association held a meeting there in 1840, and in 1865, on Shrove Tuesday, the Inn held a shooting match for a ‘porket pig’. In 1904 the Uttoxeter District Oddfellows held their half yearly meeting there and right up to 1992 there was an Aromatherapy Weekend Course held at the pub with accommodation and meals included.

The pub has had a variety of owners/landlords. In the early 1800’s after Mr Wild, came a Mr John Wood, followed by a Mr Thomas Smith. In 1849 Mr George Brassington sold up and part of the inventory was a ‘patent beer machine’. By 1851 Alderman Kidd was innkeeper, but by 1867 there is a To Let notice in the Staffordshire Advertiser by a Mr R Prince; the inn came with 3 acres of land. Mr Prince was a chemist who was resident in the village at Rose Cottage.
